Scott Satterfield’s seventh Appalachian State football team will begin the 2018 season Friday, Aug. 3, as the Mountaineers will open fall camp in preparation for a challenging schedule that includes a trip to Penn State to kick things off.

ASU is coming off a 9-4 campaign, which included a 7-1 mark in the Sun Belt Conference and 34-0 rout of Toledo in the Dollar General Bowl.

A Few Notes:

*ASU must replace four-year starting quarterback Taylor Lamb. Zac Thomas appears to be the most likely QB to win the job.

*App has a new defensive coordinator after Nate Woody left for Georgia Tech. Bryan Brown, the cornerbacks coach the last few years, slides over into that spot. According to reports, the transition was smooth in spring camp.

*RB Jalin Moore has more career rushing yards than any player in FBS except one. The senior has run for 3,170 yards as a Mountaineer.

*App State is 27-3 in its last 30 Sun Belt Conference games.

*The opener at Penn State continues a trend of starting the season at programs that have won national championships in football. In 2017, ASU opened at Georgia, at Tennessee in 2016 and Michigan in 2014. Also, after playing Howard in the Hall of Fame Day Game to kick off the 2015 season, ASU traveled to Clemson.

*The Mountaineers averaged 33.5 points and 440 yards on offense per game last season.

*App State’s defense allowed giving up 20 points and 343 yards per contest a year ago.

*Also, ASU’s defense recorded 38 sacks last fall while the offense allowed just 8.
