BG's keys to the game

Appalachian State hits the road for the second time this season on Saturday, as it opens the program's final Southern Conference season with the Elon Phoenix. The Mountaineers will also be looking for their first win of the season.

In order to get a better look at what the Mountaineers must do to earn a league opening victory, we turned to former Appalachian linebacker Brandon Grier for his keys to the game.

Special Teams, Special Teams, Special Teams!!!

Special teams is key this week. Elon has a talented kicker in David Petroni, who has placed the ball inside the 20-yard-line eight times this year. So; our special teams have to make smart decisions this weekend and help our offense get good field position. We also have to tackle better on the kickoff and punt teams. We cannot give their returners the opportunity to make big plays.

Offense Has To Start Fast

The offense has to start fast. Elon has and veteran defense and will be fired up to see the Black and Gold on their field. Our wide receivers will have to do a good job with getting open and make defenders miss in the open field especially if sophomore defensive back Julius Moore plays like he did last week with a career high of 11 tackles.

Containing WR Kierre Brown

Elon is known for its wide receivers and junior wide receiver Kierre Brown is one that our defense will have totake out of his game early. Brown was selected to the watch list for the College Football Performance Award (CFPA Wide Receiver); he will be a big part of the Phoenix offense.
