Odds and Ins

The Lions finished seventh in the SAC last year with a conference record of 7-9.

Mars Hill returns just four players from last year's team.

Appalachian State and Mars Hill have met 14 times with ASU holding a 10-4 advantage. The two last met in 2002 with ASU winning, 104-72.

Outlook

Appalachian State will have it's lone exhibition contest of the year against the Mars Hill Lions Friday evening, and the coaching staff will look to fine tune their system and get their players more comfortable in what they are asking of them.

Though Mars Hill enjoyed some success last season, the Lions bring in an almost entirely new team - thus making what they carry to the table a major question mark. For Appalachian State, however, the concern will not be with what the Lions bring in terms of talent, but what they do in terms of style and approach.

Exhibitions always serve as an opportunity for teams to get better, and this Friday will be no different. Buzz Peterson and his staff will undoubtedly experiment, mix and match, and altogether look to find the best combinations and feel for the team. They'll test them in certain situations, and see how they respond to live action that features different looks.

Tonight's game may look sloppy at times, and it may not, but overall the score of the matchup won't matter as much as what the team accomplishes. It's always difficult to transition from one head coach to another, but having had the opportunity to travel for exhibition play this summer, the Apps have a head start in Peterson's system.

The Mountaineers should cruise to victory tonight, and will hands down leave the game a better team with a better understanding of what is expected.

The score ...

ASU 106 - MARS HILL 66
